It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and no it is not Christmas! You guys know as soon as it starts warming up in South Carolina, I am in heaven! Not only do I get excited for pool season and the kids to be done with school. But I’m most excited because I get to plant my garden again! I’ve had so many questions about gardening over the past few years. I genuinely feel like I have a green thumb now and can offer support!
I’m truly so happy to be back gardening everyday! If you’re a beginner, check out my Gardening 101 blog post!
Our 2023 Garden
This year, we decided to do things a bit differently. I had BIG intentions for gardening throughout the fall last year, but then I found out I was pregnant. Let’s just say, that intention quickly changed. I had a human to raise now instead of just some tomatoes!
At the beginning of this year, Eric and I sent off soil samples to Clemson University’s AG Center. We wanted to get a soil analysis done and be really educated on what was in our garden. While the results came back pretty good overall, we did take their feedback and focus on a few things. One being to add lime and organic fertilizer to our raised beds! Has anyone else done this?
We also are planning to add a few more raised beds for more growing space! We’ve also invested in buying new obelisks and trellises! Then of course, we’re planting new & different plant varieties and flowers! Last year we were all about the Cut & Come Again Zinnias. This year we’ll be planting lots of flowers but a ton of edible plants too! Bring on all the veggies! So far in our beds, we have a variety of lettuces, broccoli, strawberries, radishes, variety of tomatoes, a variety of peppers, and some herbs. I will be adding, squash, zucchini, cantaloupe, okra, watermelon and flowers!
This year, I’m going to work on more companion planting and planting intensively! So, we will see how that goes! Feel free to send over any suggestions! Now let’s get into some must have gardening tools!

Last thing to keep in mind as we head into another gardening season is CROP ROTATION. My husband shared this fun fact with me. He said basically do not grow the same crop (or vegetable) in the same spot as last year. By rotating your crops, you help diminish diseases or pests you may of had on that crop last year. So I’m doing some rotating around this year! Which is new to me!
