If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting Glacier National Park but didn’t know where to start — steal my 4-day itinerary! This trip was one for the books — from exploring Whitefish, Montana to chasing fall colors along Going-to-the-Sun Road, it was absolutely magical.
We stayed at The Stalls at Whitefish, a beautifully restored equestrian barn turned cozy retreat just 15 minutes from downtown Whitefish. It was the perfect home base — rustic, charming, and close to everything we wanted to do. I can’t recommend it enough if you’re looking for that authentic Montana feel without giving up comfort or convenience.

We went in early October, and honestly, I think we timed it perfectly. Fall in Montana is breathtaking — golden aspens, crisp mountain air, and way fewer crowds compared to summer. Going-to-the-Sun Road was still open when we arrived, and driving it surrounded by fall colors felt like stepping into a postcard.
I researched that the parks GTTSR usually is open until the 3rd Monday in October (weather permitting.) ALWAYS do your research before booking!
Our 4-Day Glacier + Whitefish Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Whitefish, Settle In + Explore Downtown
We flew into Glacier Park International Airport, picked up our rental car, and headed to The Stalls. After unpacking, we spent the afternoon exploring downtown Whitefish — popping into local shops, grabbing groceries, and enjoying dinner at Blackstar! Food was great and the view was even better.
Day 2 – Glacier National Park + Going-to-the-Sun Road
This was our big Glacier day! We started VERY early, packed lunch + snacks, and drove the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Every turn revealed another stunning view — lakes, waterfalls, and snow-dusted peaks. We stopped at Lake McDonald, Logan Pass, and several overlooks along the way. Definitely bring layers — the temperature changes quickly in the park!

Day 3 – Flathead Lake/ Hungry Horse/ Glacier Adventures
We spent the morning at Flathead Lake and took the kids to the alpine coaster. They had a blast and rode it twice. We headed back to Glacier but stopped in hungry horse at the Huckleberry Patch for lunch. It’s one of the places everyone said we had to go to. They’re famous for all of their huckleberry sweet treats.
If you’re visiting with kids, check out some of the other family-friendly trails nearby or plan a scenic chairlift ride at Whitefish Mountain Resort if it’s open! We tried this but it had closed for the season.
Day 4 – Slow Morning + Departure
We enjoyed one last slow Montana morning at The Stalls — coffee on the porch, watching the wildlife, and soaking up that mountain air before packing up. We headed to Buffalo Bar, a local spot in downtown Whitefish for breakfast. Before we headed to the airport we hit the town on Kalispell and explored all the neat shops on main street in this very old town!

Why You’ll Love Visiting Glacier in the Fall
If you’ve been wondering when to visit Glacier National Park, I can’t recommend early October enough. The fall colors are unreal, the crowds are gone, and you get to experience a peaceful side of the park that summer visitors miss. Between the charming town of Whitefish, cozy stays like The Stalls, and the jaw-dropping beauty of Glacier National Park — this trip was everything I hoped for and more.
