When I was pregnant with my third child, it prompted me to take an even closer look at the products we use daily. Transitioning to non-toxic alternatives became a top priority, not just for my own health but for the well-being of my entire family. The motivation behind choosing non-toxic products stems from the desire to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals.
Many conventional products contain ingredients that can be harmful over time, including endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and allergens. By opting for non-toxic alternatives, you create a safer, healthier environment for you and your family. If you’re considering making similar changes, here’s a guide to help you get started with some practical and effective swaps.
Simple Swaps for Everyday Products
Conventional cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals. Here are some safer alternatives:
All-Purpose Cleaner: Try Attitude. They offer effective cleaning without the harmful chemicals. We use their body wash too!
Dish Soap: Puracy and Molly Suds provide excellent non-toxic dishwashing options.
Laundry Detergent: Consider ECOS, Molly’s Suds, or Naturally It’s Clean for gentle, eco-friendly laundry solutions.
Premium & Soft Bamboo Toilet Paper | Davids Natural Toothpaste | Organic Cotton Pillow Cases | Bamboo Qtips | Public Goods Body & Hand Lotion | Non Toxic Air Freshener | Non Toxic Soy Candle
Swaps For The Kitchen
Reusable Paper Towels | Folkulture Wooden Spoons | 24 Piece Glass Storage Containers | Dishwasher Pods | Molly’s Suds Natural Liquid Dish Soap | CAROTE Pots and Pans Set
Keep in mind, the products we put ON our skin are more important than those we use around the house. The first item I ever swapped was deodorant, this was back when Ryder was a baby and I read and researched about the dangers of aluminum in our deodorants. I did a “pot detox” for two weeks before I switched to a natural deodorant. I’ve used TONS over the years and you have to try until you find what works for you. But consider switching to an aluminum-free deodorant like Salt & Stone or Schmidt’s.
The skin is our largest organ, so choosing safer skincare and cosmetics is crucial. Here is a list of clean beauty I have and love! Ilia Beauty provides a range of non-toxic makeup options that perform well and are kind to your skin. I use LOTS of Ilia products!
Lastly, when it comes to our little ones, gentler is always better. Check out my recommendations for non-toxic baby products here.
My Top Tips for Transitioning to Non-Toxic Products
- Start Small: You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. Begin with one category, such as cleaning products, and gradually make changes.
- Read Labels: Familiarize yourself with common toxic ingredients to avoid, such as parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.
- DIY Options: Consider making some of your own products. Simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils can be used to create effective cleaners.
- Budget Wisely: Non-toxic products can be more expensive, so plan and budget for these changes gradually to avoid financial strain.
Making the switch to non-toxic products is a journey, not a destination. It’s about making informed choices and small changes that add up over time. By choosing safer alternatives, you’re investing in the health and well-being of your family. Remember, every small step counts, and your efforts will create a safer, healthier home environment for everyone.
